I have been following Sarah Palin and hoping that she would find a national spotlight with the Conservative movement for months. Thanks to another blog www.palinforvp.blogspot.com, I got to really know her record and background.
Let me also say, as you can tell from prior posts, I am NOT a big McCain enthusiast at all. But with this nomination, I am 100% behind him. He has shown me, despite sometimes attacking us 'Conservatives', he really is a maverick and knows we are important. Sarah Palin will become the next leader of the Republican Party and we can thank John McCain for that. Sarah is going to bring the party back to life!
She, like Bobby Jindal, is the new fresh face of Conservatism. The Republican Party was and still is dying in many ways. McCain taking a shot with a Sarah Palin is a risk, but one worth taking. No matter what happens, she becomes the new face of the Republican Party going forward.
Let's take a moment to look at her record. She served in local government as council member and mayor. Then ran a primary against a sitting entrenched REPUBLICAN Governor who was corrupt. She lost in a very close race. The Governor decided the best way to handle this 'reformer' was to give her a plum job. She served on Alaska's Gas and Pipeline Commission and sat next to the head of the Republican Party for the State. She was also on a Ethics Commission. She shortly thereafter resigned from the Gas Commission and publicly cited the high corruption of her party and the government leaders. It was her mission to rout out those involved and change the way 'good ole Alaska' politics was working.
She ran again, defeated the sitting Governor. Many of the people she went after went to jail or were convicted of crimes and wrong doing.
She has been to Iraq to visit her national guard troops serving there. She is the Commander in Chief of the State's National Guard. She recently completed a Transcontinental Natural Gas Pipeline Agreement with Canada to provide construction of a new pipeline to bring much needed resources to the lower 48.
She pushed major ethics reforms. She has used her veto pen. And most recently, she supported her LT Governor in his successful primary against a sitting Republican Congressman who has been linked to the Ted Stevens scandal. Sarah Palin KNOWS how to get things done.
The vicious and down right nasty attacks have been constant for over 5 days now. All of them on the personal front. They can't challenger her on what she did as governor. The Main Stream Media (MSM) and the democrats are down right fearful of her being elected. They take women as a one issue constituency, and having someone like Palin elected nationally would destroy their ability to frame issues and bash those who don't fit their mold of what a person should be.
We have not seen this type of attack on a person since Clarence Thomas. Justice Thomas also broke the stereotype that the Left and the MSM wanted to make sure never changed. All Blacks are liberal, think the same, and if you didn't you were an Uncle Tom. He still is abused about his views to this day almost a decade later despite an outstanding career as a jurist. Sarah Palin will meet the same fate unless we the PEOPLE take an active role.
They have brought up her husband's DWI from over TWENTY years ago when he was 22. Yet, Obama, the man would be President, admits in own words he used COCAINE when he was in 20s. You tell me which is more relevant if we are going after a person's character? How many reporters are going over every detail of Sarah Palin and her family at this very moment? How many New York Times reporters in 19 months of this campaign have been researching Obama's past with Randy Ayers- an admitted terrorist who attempted to detonate bombs outside the Pentagon in the 1960s and to this DAY wishes he had done more? How about Obama's judgement to sit in a church for 10 years that spewed racist anti-American vitriol? Disagree with Palin on abortion or the 2nd Amendment? That is fair game. But to destroy a person's 17 year old daughter is over the line of any decency.
As a young person, seeing someone of her character out there, not afraid to take on this challenge in the face of whither attack and more to come over the next 60 days, I am very impressed. She is 44 and in the arena trying to make a real difference. You have to admire her courage and grit.
Sarah Palin is under heavy fire right now. But she is from the West. She built her career on her own - no bounce off a husband's political career, no following in prior family member's election and name. No she has become a success through hard work and determination. She has the pioneer western American spirit, something the MSM and far left can't understand.
I look forward to Sarah Palin's speech tomorrow night. I look forward to making the Left Wing's skin crawl as America gets to know the Governor of Alaska. McCain picked someone as far away from Washington as possible. I say well done...very well done. We have had enough of Washington as usual. McCain/Palin...REAL change.

So Long Good Friend...
Well, another terrible loss for the Republicans in a Special Election..this time, in the heart of Red Country - Mississippi!
Another Republican went down to defeat in a district that Bush won by 12 points. He lost to a CONSERVATIVE Democrat by 8 points. That is serious news.
The Dems are running 'conservative' candidates and the Republicans are running 'moderates' and getting their clocks cleaned.
The Party is about to self destruct come November 2008. This could be the end of the Republicans. If Obama wins, they will be out in the wilderness for decades, if they even remain as a viable political party.
The country is turning left and looking for BIG government answers.
Where are the Republicans? Where are the leaders? Who is branding the image? Who is out there explaining freedom, liberty, small government, low taxes, national defense? NO ONE. Where are the REpublicans in Congress? Where is their agenda? Where is their energy policy? Again, MIA. Just a pathetic terrible bunch.
In 1994, Republicans swept to victory on change, ideas, and promist to ACT. Just 10 principals - Contract with America. It was simple and it resonated.
McCain is now telling us he will allow Congress to question him on the floor of the House, similar to the Prime Minister of Great Britian. Newsflash Senator - WE ARE NOT A PARLIMENTARY SYSTEM! The Prime Minister IS a MEMBER of Parliment and SELECTED by the majority party. Our PRESIDENT is a SEPERATE but EQUAL BRANCH. IF (which is a BIG IF) he is elected, his role it to protect and defend his office. He has to ensure the power and influence of the Presidency. I really wonder if anyone in this Country gets a bit of education about the founding of nation.
There was a story when George Washington first became President. He went to the Senate Chamber to discuss a possible treaty with another nation...He left very shortly after and wrote 'I will never return to that place again'. Our founders would be SICK if they hear McCain lowering the Presidency to be questioned by the Congress. What a disgrace.
But this is the 'leader' of the Republican Party. He wants Cap and Trade, believes in MAN made global warming. Turning left, will not win you any votes. We already have 2 candidates on the left.

But we have to regroup, start at the local level, train up-coming young conservative candidates, rebuild county organizations. The Dems are about three years ahead of us at this point. We have a lot of work to do.

Oil and politics
Well, it was 1995, the Contract With America swept Republican reformers to control Congress for the first time in forty years the previous year. The Congress, acting to try and ensure we had a viable home energy source passed legislation to support drilling in ANWAR. Bill Clinton vetoed it. He and his party in Congress arguement - it would take 10 years to get the resource, we didn't need it, and we needed to 'conserve'. There was just not enough oil to make a difference. Well, here we are 13 years later. All projections were that ANWAR would produce 1 million barrles a DAY. Wouldn't it be nice if the US was PRODUCING 1 million barrels more of our OWN oil? I think it might just have made a bit of difference. Some other things to consider:
Since 1980 we have CUT our domestic oil production by 40%, while increasing need of foreign oil by 52%. (Caused by ohnerous environmental and government regulations)
The price per barrel when Clinton vetoed that legislation - $19
Price at the pump - $1.19 a gallon.
Amount of acreage that would be affected by drilling in ANWAR - 3,000. Total amount of the Preserve - 300 MILLION acres.
We can drill cleaner and more affectively without damaging the surrounding environment better then 30 years ago.
Can we please consider using our domestic resources so we can end our need to use dictators and terrorist oil fields? You can not conserve and still have economic growth, it just is not possible.
Some other interesting facts:
In the Gulf of Mexico alone - US territory - enough natural gas reserves to heat 120 million homes for 60 years.
Off our Coasts currently (where China and other nations drill right now) we have 120 BILLION barrels of oil - enough to run 60 million cars for over 60 years.
This is what we have right now that has been discovered and could be used. Energy independence anyone?
Oil is a political tool for socialist and communists in our government to create suffering. This suffering allows for them to blame some evil corporation. And that leads to VOTES. It is an attack on good old CAPITALISM .... Plain and simple. Oil gives us the economic engine to invest and grow the economy, leading to a better quality of life and better wages for everyone. The people who have this agenda need to create a dependent class to ensure their elected power.
We must conserve and be concerned about the environment. But let's be honest, oil drives our economic engine. We NEED to run our cars, businesses, and lives. We had a choice 10 years ago and it is costing us dearly now. We need a vision for the future. Use our resources HERE, while finding a viable alternative fuel for down the road. Stop lying to the American people. No windmill or solar panel will replace oil in the near future. There is plenty, is NOT a supply problem. It is a leadership problem. ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

Divine Providence
I was visiting my family this past weekend. My father and I had the chance to catch some of "John Adams" on HBO. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a great favor and start to watch it. It was tremendous.
The thing that kept coming back to me was the United States was TRULY blessed by God. Clearly, we should not have succeeded to form an independent nation as we did in the 1780s. All signs pointed to total and complete failure. But with some amazing men who gave everything they had for the 'cause' of Liberty, we are still standing today.
Clearly, Divine Providence has blessed this nation and I hope still does. There are still great men and GREAT women who hold the values of the Revolution in great regard.
The other great value of the show was to provide insight into the relationship John Adams had with his wife. She was his greatest friend and more than that his confidant and advisor.
I wish our educational system spent more time on really brining our Founders to life and explain just how much they put on the line for all us. We were lucky then as we are today to have those willing to sacrifice.
It makes the words "God Bless America" mean so much more than just another phrase.

American Exceptionalism
American Exceptionalism was celebrated today at the White House. The United States of America's guest, Pope Benedict, gave a speech about what America has meant to the world. It was truly inspiring and had a great deal of meaning.
We are the greatest nation on earth because of our heavinly father has blessed us and our people will sacrifice for freedom whenever asked. It was great. Then the United States Army Chorus sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic...just flat out amazing and whenever I hear that song, I always get goose bumps.
In a time of such negative media spin about all that is wrong with America and how bad we are and how bad everyone is doing, it was nice to for once, celebrate the good and the great about our country.

Thank you for your gracious words of welcome on behalf of the people of the United States of America. I deeply appreciate your invitation to visit this great country. My visit coincides with an important moment in the life of the Catholic community in America: the celebration of the two-hundredth anniversary of the elevation of the country's first Diocese – Baltimore – to a metropolitan Archdiocese, and the establishment of the Sees of New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Louisville. Yet I am happy to be here as a guest of all Americans. I come as a friend, a preacher of the Gospel and one with great respect for this vast pluralistic society. America's Catholics have made, and continue to make, an excellent contribution to the life of their country. As I begin my visit, I trust that my presence will be a source of renewal and hope for the Church in the United States, and strengthen the resolve of Catholics to contribute ever more responsibly to the life of this nation, of which they are proud to be citizens.
From the dawn of the Republic, America's quest for freedom has been guided by the conviction that the principles governing political and social life are intimately linked to a moral order based on the dominion of God the Creator. The framers of this nation's founding documents drew upon this conviction when they proclaimed the "self-evident truth" that all men are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights grounded in the laws of nature and of nature's God. The course of American history demonstrates the difficulties, the struggles, and the great intellectual and moral resolve which were demanded to shape a society which faithfully embodied these noble principles. In that process, which forged the soul of the nation, religious beliefs were a constant inspiration and driving force, as for example in the struggle against slavery and in the civil rights movement. In our time too, particularly in moments of crisis, Americans continue to find their strength in a commitment to this patrimony of shared ideals and aspirations.
In the next few days, I look forward to meeting not only with America's Catholic community, but with other Christian communities and representatives of the many religious traditions present in this country. Historically, not only Catholics, but all believers have found here the freedom to worship God in accordance with the dictates of their conscience, while at the same time being accepted as part of a commonwealth in which each individual and group can make its voice heard. As the nation faces the increasingly complex political and ethical issues of our time, I am confident that the American people will find in their religious beliefs a precious source of insight and an inspiration to pursue reasoned, responsible and respectful dialogue in the effort to build a more humane and free society.
Freedom is not only a gift, but also a summons to personal responsibility. Americans know this from experience – almost every town in this country has its monuments honoring those who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom, both at home and abroad. The preservation of freedom calls for the cultivation of virtue, self-discipline, sacrifice for the common good and a sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate. It also demands the courage to engage in civic life and to bring one's deepest beliefs and values to reasoned public debate. In a word, freedom is ever new. It is a challenge held out to each generation, and it must constantly be won over for the cause of good (cf. Spe Salvi, 24). Few have understood this as clearly as the late Pope John Paul II. In reflecting on the spiritual victory of freedom over totalitarianism in his native Poland and in eastern Europe, he reminded us that history shows, time and again, that "in a world without truth, freedom loses its foundation", and a democracy without values can lose its very soul (cf. Centesimus Annus, 46). Those prophetic words in some sense echo the conviction of President Washington, expressed in his Farewell Address, that religion and morality represent "indispensable supports" of political prosperity.
The Church, for her part, wishes to contribute to building a world ever more worthy of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God (cf. Gen 1:26-27). She is convinced that faith sheds new light on all things, and that the Gospel reveals the noble vocation and sublime destiny of every man and woman (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 10). Faith also gives us the strength to respond to our high calling, and the hope that inspires us to work for an ever more just and fraternal society. Democracy can only flourish, as your founding fathers realized, when political leaders and those whom they represent are guided by truth and bring the wisdom born of firm moral principle to decisions affecting the life and future of the nation.
For well over a century, the United States of America has played an important role in the international community. On Friday, God willing, I will have the honor of addressing the United Nations Organization, where I hope to encourage the efforts under way to make that institution an ever more effective voice for the legitimate aspirations of all the world's peoples. On this, the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the need for global solidarity is as urgent as ever, if all people are to live in a way worthy of their dignity – as brothers and sisters dwelling in the same house and around that table which God's bounty has set for all his children. America has traditionally shown herself generous in meeting immediate human needs, fostering development and offering relief to the victims of natural catastrophes. I am confident that this concern for the greater human family will continue to find expression in support for the patient efforts of international diplomacy to resolve conflicts and promote progress. In this way, coming generations will be able to live in a world where truth, freedom and justice can flourish – a world where the God-given dignity and rights of every man, woman and child are cherished, protected and effectively advanced.
Mr. President, dear friends: as I begin my visit to the United States, I express once more my gratitude for your invitation, my joy to be in your midst, and my fervent prayers that Almighty God will confirm this nation and its people in the ways of justice, prosperity and peace. God bless America!

Now for something completely different...
Ok, I tried to post this BEFORE Villanova went on to win 2 games this past weekend and march into the Sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA tournament. They gave me a great Easter present. I couldn't be happier.
Despite the government being a complete mess, I take solace in the good things in life - friends, family, life...and my Wildcats! It just a total surprise they made it this far and I guess that is what makes it so enjoyable.
We are so very lucky we live in the greatest nation on earth and we have men and women sacrificing EVERY DAY for us all over the globe. They keep us free and safe.
So, while my other posts seemed doom and gloom, there is also much to look forward to in the future. We can 'right' the ship. We just have to get involved and tell those who are our leaders - we demand better.
In mean time, enjoy the good things, the little things around you. Friends you know you can count on, even if they are half way around the world. Family, even when they make a mess of your house after a long weekend...and yes, the nice spring surprise of my villanova wildcats. Sometimes those unexepected surprises are the best ones since you weren't prepared for them ahead of time.
Now, maybe, just MAYBE we might get another one next Friday night? It is a very very long shot since the small, tired, and beat up Wildcats face the Kansas Jayhawks....but ya gotta believe?

Economic Update
Just this past week, Fed Chief Ben Bernacke actually suggested that banks just write off these high risk loans. What does that mean - just say to someone with a no-down payment loan of $300,000, just pay back $150,000 of that...pay us SOMETHING, and that will be fine. Isn't that great for the rest of us making our mortgage payments on time?
Banks and government are being duplicitious in this scheme. By keeping the economy flooded with cash by cutting interest rates, they are killing us with inflation. Now, the Fed suggest, just write off the loans for people who can't afford to pay them.
What will happened to the secondary mortgage market for you and me? Yeah, that's right, prepare to pay 8,9,10% for mortgages. You think Banks are going to lose all that money and not look for repayment somewhere else?
So, banks, lenders, and the losers who played a game with interest only-now downpayment loans are going to get a bail out on our backs? It is amazing...with no downpayment, you have people literally just walking away from the houses. They have no money invested in the home, and the bank is on the hook. So they are just walking out of these houses and leaving the keys. No ramifications for them other than some bad credit.
What is wrong with this country? How did we get here? Yet the government and the Fedeal Reserve are going to prop up the economy, while driving up inflation for what purpose? To stave off a recession.
I am in the camp that we need to let the economy work this out. Banks will need to work through the mess they created. Some may not make it. We enter a small recession, markets will stabalize, and it will play out. Then we can move forward.
All we are facing now, is a recession, with a deflated dollar, increased energy costs, and inflation on the rise. Stagflation around the corner - remember the 1970s?
